Great vs Undeniable

I've finally figured it out. The meaning of life... No wait, that's for another time! *Ahem*, on a more serious note:

Over the past few months I've spent some time on movie sets, met up with various people and had interesting chats with fellow peers. One thing I've found repeating to both myself and others is the word 'Undeniable'. As in:

"It has to be undeniable"

What I mean by that is that in order to get the recognition, success and sense of achievement we crave for like suicidal porn addicts, I feel the work we create must be 'Undeniable'. Not good, not great, not amazing... UNDENIABLE.

Here's my definition of the two:

  • GREAT - Something you see, feel and experience and then move on.
  • UNDENIABLE - Something that gets under your skin and skull fucks you into a submissive state of awe.

As I've said before, there's a shit load of talent out there. Guys'n'Gals that make most of us look like dribbling 3 year olds in terms of the work quality they produce. I watch their films and my loins ache with downright admiration and if I'm truly honest with myself, a little bit of jealousy -- Then I move on. There's no Interest and Interaction. It was great, thanks for the ride, laters.

But how does one create something that is undeniable? I have NO fucking idea. But I do have some thoughts.

The film industry is a very subjective medium. I love 'Big Trouble in Little China'. You might think it's a pile of 80's dog shit. I love Spielberg. You might think he's a talentless grave digger. I once had a mildly heated discussion with a producer who basically said "Terminator 2 was shit."

Say whaaaaa?

To me, those movies and that particular director are undeniable in terms of everything I'd personally like to be/make/see on the big screen. And I'm pretty confident that there are plenty of people out there (audience) who would agree with me. In fact, I'm sure of it. I think what most of us filmmakers haven't figured out is how to get the attention of said people --> ORGANICALLY.

What did that guy say in Wayne's World 2?

"If you build it, they will come"

Some shit like that. I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that if our work is undeniable, the audience will find it's way to us organically. Eyebrow's will raise organically. And at some point somewhere down the line, some ass master further up the ladder will get a sniff of the monetisation potential of our work/auidence. And THAT dear friends, is what it's all about.

So what do we do until then? I feel that if our will is strong enough (and believe me mine's been rattled more times than Rocky Balboa's chin) we will continue to create, put it out there, learn, improve, create, put it out there... so on and so forth until our time comes. When that happens is anybody's guess... Well actually, no it's not. Our time will come once we have created something truly undeniable.

Until next time, folks.
